This drawing was inspired by a small game piece carved from ivory.

Darker tones are not made by pressing harder; this would damage the surface beneath. Instead, darker tones are made by layering hatch marks until the desired value is obtained. I use very fine silver wire in a mechanical pencil. I "sharpen" the wire using a nail file and buffer.
