SILVERPOINT DRAWINGS

Silverpoint is a drawing technique that was used in the Middle Ages and later. It was used by artists such as Dürer and da Vinci. It is applied to paper with a prepared surface, which can be a painted surface of gouache, casein or acylic. This background is often tinted with a pale color. A stylus with a silver wire is drawn across this surface, and leaves a silver residue. This residue will tarnish over time, turning a soft brown. Silverpoint drawings are generally pale and can include a high degree of detail.
