I use what I refer to as a "comtemporary egg tempera" technique. I use watercolors but dilute them with an egg yolk solution. The paint is applied in very thin layers and built up to achieve the desired color saturation. Egg tempera cannot be applied in washes, rather it is applied in hatched and cross-hatched strokes.
