This piece was inspired by a medieval ivory carving, though liberties were taken. Even though my sketches are meticulously planned, the characters do take on their own personality as a painting progresses. Sometimes I feel more like an observer than anything else. I began this painting while visiting Victoria, British Columbia. It seemed fitting, as I worked to the the cries of seagulls and the smell of the sea air.
