Scratchboard is a clay-coated paper. While most people are familiar with scratchboard that is coated with black ink, it is also available in white, without an ink coating. I abrade the scratchboard with a coarse sandpaper, and then draw with graphite. The graphite drawing picks up the abraded texture to achieve this effect.
